Librarian- (.6 FTE - .75 FTE)

Gallatin Gateway School is hiring one part-time (at .6 to .75 FTE) librarian with a broad spectrum of interests and experiences to teach multiple library skills at the K- 8th grade level with instruction based on the Montana State Standards. Teaching experience and a history of successful classroom management skills will be strongly considered by the interview committee.

The hired K-8 certified teacher with a library endorsement will provide instructional duties in the content areas of information skills and literacy, and library media. Our curriculum incorporates the Big6 model.

First and foremost, this position requires a love and devotion to children and to the needs of their families. Additionally, the applicants must demonstrate the ability to teach students lessons in library, Indian Education for All, writing, literature, technology, and social behaviors.

Extra Assignments required of the Librarian: This position includes pre-school story time, book fairs, and library fundraisers.

Skills Required
Skills needed include strong classroom management, computer knowledge, grammar and writing, differentiated instruction, and knowledge of library and information skills. This job requires excellent organization for the inventory and maintenance of library materials, written and verbal communication skills for the classroom and for community relations (i.e. school newsletter and website). This position calls for a team-player approach and an ability to integrate content across multiple disciplines. The librarian works closely with the staff providing curriculum resources for classroom study.

Qualified applicants should show experience with guided reading, know the Montana State Standards and Expectations, and be Montana K-8 Certified.

Teacher training benefitting the applicant includes PowerSchool Grading Program, Dibels, DRA, AimsWeb, Step-Up-To-Writing, The Big6, MBI, Steps to Respect, Second Step, and experience modifying curriculum and grading for students at-risk and/or the gifted. A flexible, team-player approach is needed for working in this family-oriented, high-expectations school atmosphere. Deadlines are of the utmost importance for report cards, newsletters, curriculum planning, etc.

Specifics of the Curriculum/Duties:

Technology for staff: All student grading for parent review is online and updated weekly. Parents also receive daily voice mail of homework using our voice mail system. Day planners are provided and required to be used by all students. Computer use is integrated into classroom assignments and learning expectations. The school produces a monthly newsletter, which requires teachers to submit detailed curriculum articles and pictures by a monthly deadline.

Art: Sixth, seventh, and eighth graders can select an art elective. In addition, the school holds a student art auction each spring. K- 5th grade incorporate art into the classroom lessons.

Technology for students: Technology is integrated into all middle school lessons. A strong background in technology and its application into student lessons is important.

Math: The math curriculum at Gallatin Gateway School is advanced allowing for all 8th graders to take Algebra. As a result, teachers use resources and assessments to meet the Montana State Standards, which include McDougal-Littell text, online math programs, and AimsWeb. A foundation and ability to understand math will assist the applicant in teaching study skills.

Science: Gallatin Gateway offers a hands-on inquiry-based science program allowing for cross-curricular integration of social studies and Native American studies.

Literature: Students are instructed in reading at the middle school level using novel studies. In addition, students’ reading incorporates various genres and Indian Education studies. As reading motivation, students participate in Accelerated Reader through guidance from their homeroom teacher.

Language Arts: A foundation and ability to understand grammar, paragraph development, etc. will assist the applicant in teaching social studies and study skills.

Social Studies: Student activities are based on the Montana Standards. Art, historic simulations, and role play may be integrated into social studies activities. Students also use Maps, Globes, and Graphs to reinforce geography and mapping skills.

Social Behavior: Gallatin Gateway School eighth graders participate in activities and lessons using Montana Behavior Initiative (MBI), Steps to Respect, and Second Step in the classroom. The school counselor supplements these lessons using her instruction on the “Gator Way”. In addition leadership skills are provided to eighth graders in preparation for high school.

Community Projects: Each grade level provides a form of community service.
