“I think Salesville, or Gateway, or Slabtown is a very neat town. Sales came and bought the land from Tomlinson and here in this very place, Sales started a mill.”

“Before it was a big booming town, there were lots of saloons, gambling casinos and things like that. Then the Milwaukee built the railroad and the Gallatin Gateway Inn in 1927 and that really got Gateway cooking with gas. Some people thought that gas would never run out, but it did. You see then people started getting their own cars and didn’t bother to stop at the Inn anymore.”

“The mill was located at the west end of town near the first bridge and about 100 feet off the highway.. Zachary Sales was the person who got the mill going in the 1800’s. At that time the town was called Salesville. After a few years it became Gallatin Gateway.”

“In the late 1800’s immigrants came to Salesville to make their homes to seek their fortunes. Zachery Sales built a saw mill near the site of Salesville. They were floating the logs down the Gallatin River from the mouth of the Gallatin Canyon to his saw mill. Several families located here.
A platt of the town was submitted to the Territory of Montana, July 13, 1883. This town was to be known as Salesville. The people worked together to build a church for all to use. This community church was built in 1885 on the corner of Adams and Bozeman streets. Baptism was in the Gallatin River. The church has been in continuous use through the years.”

“The Salesville Post Office was built June 10th 1880. The name was changed to the Gallatin Gateway Post office on March 6th 1927 and it has been Gallatin Gateway for 51 years. The railroad brought the mail to Gateway, Bozeman and Belgrade. In the early days teams drawing wagons or sleds in the winter, brought the mail to the Post Office.”
